Congratulations to the Winner of Our VE Day Sideboard

As we saw all over the news in May, it’s been 75 years since the end of the Second World War in Europe. To mark the momentous occasion, we created a one-of-a-kind piece of furniture. Our commemorative VE Day Sideboard was up for grabs to whoever could guess the number of screws used in it – or whoever was closest.

We’re now delighted to announce that Kevin from Kirkham, Lancashire, has won the sideboard with his brilliant guess of 82 screws. Read on to find out more…

The VE Day Sideboard

Our commemorative VE Day piece began with our beautiful Florence sideboard. Influenced by the classic Victorian country kitchen, it echoes a design that was still going strong throughout the first half of the 20th century – the perfect canvas for our VE Day design.

We then modified the sideboard with our own VE Day design, inspired by the Union Flag and the courageous men and women who put their lives in the line for our freedom. That’s complete with the most iconic, stirring quote from the one and only Winston Churchill.

How many screws?

While a standard sideboard of this size would have 100 or even 150 screws, we utilise a range of traditional woodworking techniques to minimise the number of screws needed to make our furniture

We can now reveal that the sideboard actually has 86 screws in total. Most these screws are from hinges, magnets, knobs and on the back panel, so they’re quite small and not involved in the main construction of the sideboard.

Kevin was closest with his estimate of 82 screws. Here he is with the beautiful commemorative sideboard - finally in its new home. Congratulations, Kevin!

Our new HQ!

Despite lockdown, it’s been a busy few months for the team as furniture.co.uk. As well as our competition and special contact-free delivery for customers, we’ve completed a move to our new premises. Our new headquarters for warehousing is now located at the stunning Edison Swan Cable Works.

In keeping with the historic theme, the building has stood strong for over a century. It even played its own part in the second world war, possessing one of only four machines capable of making lead alloy tubes needed to transport fuel to the Allied troops.

Left to go derelict in the early 2000s, the building has been given a new lease of life with a complete renovation. We’re happy to call it home as we continue to grow and expand – and find new ways to deliver amazing furniture at incredible prices.
